CONCEPT

Where The Wild Things Are is a children's opera written in 1983. The design brief given invited us to take our own creative interpretation of the opera. My inspiration for the 'Wild Things' came from Celtic mythology where I explored designing many creature-based characters akin to the themes of nature and the earth. Sampling took the form of embroidery and felting resembling moss and other earthy textures, organic printmaking pressing bright flowers into the muslin and layering natural materials such as feathers, tree bark, and moss. Working away from the body and creating larger shapes was another purpose of this brief. With this, I could explore sculpture and the importance of understanding alternative material's weights and limitations.

Scenography was also explored during this brief as we were tasked with designing the set for this opera to scale. This taught the importance of precise measurements and the consideration of a costume's limitation of movement and travel on stage. The set I designed for was my interpretation of scene 3 where max travels to the world where the Wild Things live. Our research and preparation needed to include consideration for off-stage wings, lighting effects, and set design/props with a scale model for reference.
